“Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you believe that you too can become great.” – Mark Twain
“Muster your wits; stand in your own defence!” – William Shakespeare
This is the tale of a girl who was once told that she’d starve if she became a writer. She became a writer anyway… and hasn’t starved yet but she does still have visions of eating frozen pizza and cold tuna for the rest of her life. Right now, she is a freshman in college. Most of the time, she loves it but at times, Jo gets bored and sometimes she gets stressed; there are four weeks of fall semester left and she’s beginning to burn out. (Happens all the time, I’m told.) Hence, she’s decided to begin posting all the funny and weird things that happen to her. (The sort of things that she means to write down, hoping to work into a story later, but almost never does.) If you take great interest (or pity) in her writing then perhaps you’ll donate to her college fund. She’s using the pen name Jo because if you know her then you know her name and if you don’t know, you probably don’t care. But everything written here really did happen. And no, she doesn’t write about herself in third person all the time either.
Hey! Don’t copy my stuff! Just link! Plagiarism is my worst nightmare! (Okay, maybe not my absolute worst nightmare but it’s close.)
Two Things to Remember
(especially when you're kind of burned out)
"All forward motion counts!"
&
"It takes time to be funny. It takes time to extract joy from life."
“And in that moment, I knew, success… success, not greatness, was the only god the entire world served.” – Drew Baylor, Elizabethtown, 2005.
Failure
"So you failed. Alright you really failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You think I care about that? I do understand. You wanna be really great? Then have the courage to fail big and stick around. Make them wonder why you're still smiling." - Claire Colburn, Elizabethtown, 2005.
"Because we have a moment here, let me tell you that I have recently become a secret connoisseur of 'last looks'. You know the way people look at you when they believe it's for the last time? I've started collecting these looks." - Drew Baylor, Elizabethtown, 2005.
No Place So Far
It's 2 am, the ticking in the hall is keeping time The clock is counting down to morning's light Too many times I've crossed the line And put my faith aside And the regret I feel won't let me sleep tonight
And even though it feels like You're a million miles away In the night time stillness I can hear You say:
No height, no depth Could keep you from my love No thing that you could ever do There's no place so far That you are out of reach No matter what you feel this still is true No thing can keep my love from you
I never thought I'd get so far from where I started out I must have left You one day at a time And thinking of the things I've done and longing for what's lost I can't believe You'd want me as I am
And even though it feels like I'm the smallest one on earth Somehow Your quiet voice inside is heard
No matter how we've fallen No matter where we are God's heart is always waiting His arms are never far
